Chicken Update! (and one soon to be lonely rooster)
The chickens have been such a nice addition to the homestead. We have 12 total and they are quickly leaving their adolescence and heading into adulthood. In the morning we let them out of the coop and they spend the day scratching around, fluffing in the shade, chasing each other and keeping a lookout for Leif.
Unfortunately, one of our Ms's turns out to be a Mr. He has a very crackly crow, imagine a twelve year old boy alternating between a tenor and a falsetto. Not quite sure what we are going to do with him. I tried Craigslist, but all I got was some responses that sounded like they were either very excited to A) eat him or B) fight him. Have any ideas? We can't keep him, I like my neighbors too much.
Said Rooster.
Here is the Egyptian Fayoumi almost grown up:
And Chamomile is developing her 'do;
The other chickens find her somewhat hilarious - they love to pick on her. Here she is with a prized worm trying to get away from the mob:
I love watching the chickens mill around, it is almost like staring at a koi pond. Leif, however, prefers a more mischievous approach involving sneak attacks and kung fu kicks. He says "Mama! I'm gonna catch a chicken now. You watch me." He hasn't quite succeeded.

He's so lucky to be able to chase after some chickens.
I love your photos, as always!
Occassionally, small zoos will take animals like this in. I used to work at one in the education department (may want to start ther), and can tell you that when it came to people who were truly just in a situation like that (and maybe were willing to support the zoo?!), we would try to either find a home. People who work at zoos are very neat in this way. Just make it clear you aren't one of those people who buys an alligator and realized that they get big and that you don't want it!
And of course, you wouldn't want to give an animal to a zoo (or frequent one) that isn't AZA accredited. :) Hope that helps!
Keep up the fabulous photos and anecdotes!
